Bio

Growing up in rural NB on a 200 acre farm gave Fraser a love of the forest at an early age. As a young boy he would roam around the forest with his grandfather who lived next door to his family home. His grandfather had no animals but yearly they would select cut their firewood and make many bails of hay keeping up the land. After graduation, he studied machining at the New Brunswick Community college which gave him the opportunity to travel all over Canada and even into Alaska throughout his 20s. He would travel all over western Canada welding and erecting steel buildings, giving him the opportunity to see many remote locations that most people never get the chance to see.

In 2014, Justin asked him if he would want to travel to Alberta and help him with a new company he was starting. Fraser is Tall Timber Resources’ 3rd employee, something which he is proud of. His first experience in the forest industry was cut block layout in -40 C weather, north of Fort McMurray. Even though they were struggling with 4-5 feet of powder snow and many days of -30 to -40 temperatures it gave him an instant love of the job. As the snow got too deep for layout, he transitioned to PSP measurements in Rocky Mountain House. After he measured his first plot he was hooked and knew he had found a career he could love.

Fraser has now been one of Tall Timber Resources field supervisors, since 2016.  That same year his now wife Emily joined Tall Timber Resources and they have done many projects together and she is always his biggest help when planning big projects. Some of the projects Fraser has supervised and participated in are:

  • Cut block layout (including remote camping in outfitters tent)
  • Hundreds of PSPs and thousands of TSPs for different mills
  • Dynamic Aspen Density Experiment (DADE) programs
  • Thousands of silviculture surveys comprising of performance, establishment and survival surveys
  • Alberta’s Regenerated Lodgepole Pine program

The project he is most proud of are the many helicopter TSP projects that he supervised and planned for crews of up to 12 people. Figuring the best plan for the use of time with the helicopter and looking at each crew members strength and weakness to determine best crew formation. All the helicopter projects he has planned for have been a success with minimal lost time.

Overall forestry has changed his life completely and he has a job he is passionate about. He receives a lot of help from his wife (Emily) who is a great forester and always pitches in when they have big projects to plan for. March 2020 they purchased a house in Swan Hills to start planting their roots. Their beautiful baby boy born in July 2020 will be mastering the DBH tape and vertex in no time! Fraser will always be thankful for the opportunity Justin gave him so long ago and he plans to make a bright future in the forest industry.

Beyond Work

Fraser is passionate about his wife, family, the outdoors and any experiences many others simply never get the chance to have including traveling to remote unseen locations.
